deceased husband's winery to world fame.

The story begins in 1805, immediately after the death of Barbe - Nicole Cliquot - Ponsardin's husband François. In lyrical images and an associative montage, the film interweaves the oppressive presence of the funeral with Barbe-Nicole's romantic memories of her husband in these first scenes. However, the film is not about empire-building, but the story of female self-assertion in a male-dominated business sector. It is not about the triumphs, but about the challenges. Contrary to her father-in-law's plans, the 27-year-old widow and single mother insists on continuing to run her husband's winery. Viticulture is her vocation and, like her husband, she pursues a qualitative approach that will revolutionize the world of champagne.
The magnificent Haley Bennett plays the widow with quiet resoluteness as both a clever and bold personality - "a visionary", one would say today. The vintage champagnes of the House of Cliquot are still called "La Grande Dame" in her honor today.
