To commemorate the stay of the later famous composer Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy in Doberan-Heiligendamm 200 years ago, the "Doberan Cultural Initiative" consisting of associations, educational institutions and the town of Bad Doberan is organizing a varied programme from June 2024.
Exactly 200 years ago, Doberan hosted the guest who would later become so famous. In the summer of 1824, fifteen-year-old Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy (1809-1847) accompanied his father Abraham to Doberan for a spa treatment lasting several weeks. Ever since Grand Duke Friedrich Franz I of Mecklenburg-Schwerin founded the first German seaside resort in 1793 and took up his summer residence in Doberan, countless renowned guests were drawn to Doberan-Heiligendamm.
Felix had already distinguished himself early on as a highly talented composer. Inspired by the grand ducal wind ensemble, two years later he composed his "Overture for Harmonic Music" op. 24, also known as "Doberan Wind Music" in the shortened version. But he could do even more: Felix drew the Doberan Minster several times and loved the bathing excursions to Heiligendamm.
