It is the time from the beginning of the First World War, the end of the German Empire, through fourteen years of flagging democracy and the so-called "Golden Twenties", while rapidly increasing anti-Semitism and growing nationalism up to Adolf Hitler and the eve of dictatorship herald the approaching weather lights.
At the fashionable Grand Hotel Brissago in Ticino, the writer Erich Kästner meets his long-admired colleague Kurt Tucholsky. Based on this little-documented, chance meeting, author Norbert Wollschläger follows the lives of these celebrated writers of their time, also retracing the footsteps of their colleagues Erich Maria Remarque and Emil Ludwig.

Norbert Wollschläger spent many years researching the lives of Erich Kästner and Kurt Tucholsky as well as the historical background of a time in which - as many say - freedom was squandered. In his novel, the sociologist, psychologist and publicist shares with the reader the fate of such diverse protagonists as Erich Kästner, Kurt Tucholsky, Erich Maria Remarque, the department store king Max "James" Emden - and others, especially the women who owned the hearts of these great spirits of their time.
