2025 marks the 500th anniversary of the Reformation in Stralsund, an occasion that the Protestant parishes of Stralsund are celebrating together in a variety of ways. The Bach Choir of St. Nikolai,
the choir of the Luther parish, members of the Stralsund Singakademie and the symphony orchestra will be brought together in a major project. The 5th Symphony, the "Reformation Symphony" by Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy, will be performed. He has set the words of the psalm to the soloists and all the passages in which Luther's hymn "A Mighty Fortress" is quoted to the choir.
Mendelssohn's successor as director of the royal cathedral choir, Albert Becker, wrote his Reformation cantata op. 28 for the Luther anniversary in 1883 with delicate and luminous tones.
Soloists and orchestras from Berlin and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern accompany the choirs in this project.
The concert in the wonderful Kulturkirche St. Jakobi promises to be a cultural highlight that is sure to radiate far beyond the borders of Stralsund.
