- Touring tips: Eldetal with forests and unspoiled nature, Lewitz nature reserve with fish ponds and numerous bird species, villages with historic town centers.
Rail connections: e.g. Parchim, Grabow, Neustadt-Glewe
No noise, no hustle and bustle. At most, a small traffic jam because a family of ducks crosses the way. The Müritz-Elde waterway is probably the most peaceful traffic artery in the north and an extremely refreshing travel companion.
The journey into the blue begins in the half-timbered town of Parchim on the Wockersee. Meter by meter, the cyclists conquer the picture-book country with dandelion meadows, corn poppy fields, cows and cherry trees, sunny hills and sparse forests. From Lübz, the route takes you across the gently rolling meadows and fields to Plau am See. Picturesque lanes lead down to Lake Plau, one of the largest lakes in Germany. Cute boathouses and idyllic bathing spots hide in the reed belts.
Everywhere are witnesses of the ice age - extensive heath and moor landscapes with orchids and gentian. Almost by themselves, the bikes roll past the Ruhner mountains, through shady forests down to Grabow - the sweet home of chocolate kisses.
The ride through the sparsely populated countryside takes you to Lenzen with its ancient castle. Passing the 30-meter piled-up inland hiking dunes at Klein Schmölen, you reach Dömitz. From the colossal fortress there is a breathtaking panorama over the mighty river to one of the most beautiful river landscapes in Europe.
Through a blue-green labyrinth of moats and meadows, vacationers cycle into the Griese area. Despite its name, the former mining area between Alt Kaliß and Malliß surprises with its austere beauty and unspoiled nature.
Neustadt-Glewe with its castle and fortifications watches over the gateway to the "Lewitz". In the European bird sanctuary of the same name, hundreds of small canals and fish ponds shine, which are also home to white-tailed eagles and herons. Many a cyclist takes a break at the waterway rest area in Garwitz.
