Fort Dömitz (exhibition “Im Grunde“)

The bulwark of fort Dömitz overlooks the river Elbe by the city of Dömitz. Its walls saw princes, army commanders, and kings come and go and inspired poets. Nature lovers can find the exciting exhibition “Im Grunde” and the visitor centre of the biosphere reserve “Elbe-Schaalsee” here.

Information centre for the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve Flusslandschaft Elbe Mecklenburg-Vorpommern

Since 1997, the Elbe river landscape has been a UNESCO biosphere reserve that stretches across five federal states. The nature there is unique and the river influences the life, the landscape and people along the Elbe. At the visitor cente fortress of Dömitz visitors can get information about the UNESCO biosphere reserve.

Observation tower Plau am See

The lighthouse welcomes boaters as they enter the Müritz-Elde waterway from Lake Plaue. From its viewing platform at a height of 8 meters, it offers a fantastic panoramic view over Lake Plauer See. It is now considered the most popular photo motif among guests.

St. George´s Church Parchim

The impressive tower of St George's church rises above the half-timbered streets and gabled houses from the Middle Ages. The brick church from the 13th century has, among other things, an interior that will interest art historians.

Neustadt-Glewe Castle

The oldest preserved fortress in Mecklenburg stands in Neustadt-Glewe. It is one of the best preserved castles in Mecklenburg and can be visited. At the castle, there is a museum that is well worth seeing, as well as a restaurant and a tourist information office.

Ludwigslust castle park

The park is temporarily completely closed due to a tree fall. Measures are currently underway to restore traffic safety along the main paths. The castle museum, café and the lawn parterre are accessible.

The magnificent Ludwigslust Palace, situated in a spacious park with avenues, cascades, canals and water jumps, is the center of the late Baroque town complex. In the castle's museum, the restored rooms shine in courtly splendor and transport visitors back in time. In the hunting hall of the castle there is a café with a spacious terrace overlooking the castle park.

Castle Museum Plau am See

Children and museums - you might think that doesn't fit. In Plau am See, that's not true. The town has a museum where even the young won't get bored. The former Plau Castle offers interesting insights into history, and it also houses a unique museum of local history and technology.

Neustadt-Glewe Castle

Near the old castle, on a western branch of the Elde, Duke Adolf Friedrich I had a new castle built for Neustadt-Glewe in 1618/19. In the future, this was to serve as a secondary residence for the dukes of Mecklenburg in place of the castle.

Tourist Information Bureau of Dömitz

The country can hardly be more relaxed than on a houseboat. Seh travelers sail from lock to lock on the leisurely river to the fortress and Elbe city of Dömitz. The locks always offer a welcome opportunity to chat with other seafarers and exchange insider tips. Along the way, numerous modern waterway rest areas and marinas invite you to take a break for a swim or an excursion.

On the first leg, the blue ribbon winds through gently undulating meadows, fields and forests to Parchim. With its picturesque nooks and crannies, proud brick churches and cozy inns, Parchim is well worth a mooring. About 3 km behind the Marina Matzlow-Garwitz the Störkanal branches off to Schwerin. If you have time in your duffel bag, you can sail straight to the picture-perfect State capital Schwerin.

After the water crossing, the Lewitz landscape conservation area begins. Dozens of fish ponds glisten to the left and right of the path, where flocks of chattering birds fill their bellies. Between Neustadt-Glewe and Grabow, wide reed belts and rustling pine forests line the banks. Through the deep forests and sandy heaths of the Griesen area, you continue toward the Elbe. At the confluence with the great river lies Dömitz, whose fortress affords a ravishing view of the Elbe valley.

Water profile

The Müritz-Elde waterway is ideal for an extensive vacation on the water. Even inexperienced houseboat captains can enter the water here without hesitation. The Müritz-Elde waterway descends to the Elbe River on 17 lock steps. Please inform yourself about the respective lock times before starting your trip. Special locks are possible. The 44 km long Stör Canal can be navigated to the State capital Schwerin. Refueling is only possible at roadside gas stations.
