The poetry of graves in Frederick's time. Funeral and mourning culture around 1800
Caspar David Friedrich repeatedly dealt with the end of life, which can be clearly seen in his oeuvre. It is therefore only logical that in the painter's anniversary year, the funeral culture and conceptions of death of the time are also addressed. In an illustrated lecture, art historian Dr. Anja Kretschmer brings to life how death underwent a change in interpretation during the Romantic period. In the course of a transfiguration, death was reinterpreted as an eternally sweet sleep. Using C. D. Friedrich's paintings and examples, it becomes clear how death and the culture of mourning took on an equally individual and personally intimate image.
