Weird historical criminal case
The story about the bizarre dirty letters that were sent to a large number of people in Littlehampton is true. In the early 1920s, the whole of England puzzled over who might have written them. But director Thea Sharrock's tragicomedy is about more than just a weird historical criminal case. She uses the small-town scandal to paint a picture of a hypocritical, reactionary and deeply misogynistic society.
The examples of the three very different women Edith, Rose and Gladys show how the patriarchy tries to keep women down, prevent female solidarity and nip the emerging women's movement in the bud. Despite its serious subject matter, the screenplay by comedian Jonny Sweet opts for a light tone. With wicked wit, quick dialog and the liberating power of swearing, he gets to the heart of the repressive post-war society. FSK 12
