The gentle tragicomedy 'Fallen Leaves' (2023), which was already considered lost, can be seen as the fourth part of Aki Kaurismäki's worker trilogy, following his Finnish classics 'Shadows in Paradise' in 1986, 'Ariel - Burnt Down in Helsinki' in 1988 and The Girl from the Match Factory in 1990. At the 76th Cannes International Film Festival in 2023, his 'Fallen Leaves' was awarded the 'Prix de Jury' in competition.
'Falling Leaves' tells the story of two lonely people, Ansa (Alma Pöysti) and Holappa (Jussi Vatanen), who meet by chance in 'Helsinki' at night. Both are in search of the first, only and final love of their lives. The path to this honorable goal is made more difficult by the man's alcohol addiction, lost phone numbers, not knowing each other's names and addresses - and not least by life's general tendency to put obstacles in the way of those who seek happiness...
