A moral history episode from the first half of the 19th century
The arrival of prostitutes in the first German Baltic resort in Doberan-Heiligendamm probably began as early as 1810. Their trade was regulated by the authorities, but not banned because it attracted paying guests. It was not until 1856 that the law put an end to the tolerated immoral activities. This "gray area" of the noble bathing life offers many insights into the morals and attitudes of people at the time.
