"We have to shout, otherwise we won't be heard! Women's resistance in the GDR in the 1980s". Every Tuesday and Saturday at 11 a.m., a guided tour of the temporary exhibition is included in the admission price.
The poster exhibition "We have to shout, otherwise we won't be heard! Women's resistance in the GDR in the 1980s" tells "a story of learning to speak, taking responsibility, solidarity and the defense of human dignity in a society dominated by arbitrariness and lies". This is how Bärbel Bohley described a story of resistance that began thirty years ago.
In the early 1980s, women in East Germany founded opposition groups that networked throughout the GDR and sought publicity with protest actions. They opposed the SED regime and fought against the increasing militarization of all areas of life.
The East German Women for Peace were thus part of the European peace movement. Across national borders and military blocs, beyond the Iron Curtain, a protest movement supported by women unites against the nuclear arms race.
At the same time, environmental and human rights issues demand answers, the equality apparently granted in the GDR is questioned, arbitrariness and repression are denounced. A women's movement developed in the GDR, which was involved in the emergence of the citizens' movement and the freedom revolution of 1989.
The exhibition is published by the Robert Havemann Society, supported by funds from the Federal Foundation for the Reappraisal of the SED Dictatorship. It is the ideal medium for inviting people to engage with our contemporary history in public places such as town hall foyers, adult education centers, public libraries, schools or churches. At the same time, the exhibition provides a suitable framework for discussions with contemporary witnesses and other events.
