YrrY - Young Composition Music | Kalaha feat. Hilal Kaya - Global Grooves
Kalaha are not only an extremely captivating and energetic live band, but are also known for constantly breaking new ground in their search for musical adventures and geographical spectrums. Kalaha have managed to create a unique universe between roots, jazz and electronic, and with the collaboration with Hilal Kaya, who sings in Turkish, they have also managed to win over a Turkish audience.
Kalaha is known for setting the dance floor on fire and putting the audience in a trance. One moment you are on a fast-paced chase through the bazaar in Istanbul, the next you are floating in the cosmic eternity of outer space before landing in a dusty village in Mali. Elements from many genres, from acid rock and improvised jazz to Anatolian funk and acid techno, have been part of Kalaha's expression since their formation in 2013 and have helped them win a Danish Music Award, a Carl Award and numerous nominations. In 2021, Kalaha released the album Mystafa, which also played around a variety of genres such as Brazilian samba, Turkish 70s music, African highlife and desert blues as well as Nordic sensibility in songs with guest appearances from psych-rock king Uffe Lorenzen and folk singer Hjalte Ross. In August 2022, the band's fifth LP, Tutku, was released in collaboration with the Aarhus Jazz Orchestra and Hilal Kaya.

Yrry
combines two of the oldest ways of making music - voice and percussion - in new and surprising ways. The original trio from Bergen explores acoustics, electronics and physical expression in improvised and newly written music. For the mentoring project Borealis Ung Komponist at the Bergen Festival of Experimental Music Borealis 2023, the trio was transformed into a quartet by collaborating with cellist Carmen Bóveda. Vocalist Mari Garcés explores the tension between classical scored music and free improvisation, focusing on the voice's ability to express feelings and belonging. Percussionists Håkon Skjæret and Owen Weaver share a passion for new music and unusual instruments. Both are also colleagues in the Bit20 Ensemble as performers and mediators. Carmen Bovéda is a versatile cellist who has played with well-known pop acts such as Aurora, Gabrielle and DePresno. In the Borealis Ung Komponist project, young musicians were each invited to compose a 15-minute work for Yrry. Since the fall of 2022, Eline Rafteseth, Susanne Xin, Guoste Tamulynaite and Luke Drozd have worked intensively with their mentors Camille Norment, Lo Kristenson and Øyvind Torvund to develop new soundscapes and challenge themselves as music makers. The focus of the mentoring program was to learn from each other, to explore what it means to write music for an ensemble. With their diverse and exciting backgrounds - from composition and visual arts to improvised jazz and performance - the four helped each other develop pieces of music for Ensemble Yrry. The concert at Borealis marked the end of their participation in Borealis Ung Komponist, but the beginning of further brilliant journeys into the world of experimental music
