The anti-discrimination advisory service for Vorpommern-Rügen and Greifswald will read exciting children's books that deal with racism and diversity. Afterwards, we would like to reflect together on what we have read and share our thoughts and feelings while drawing and talking.
Why do we think it is so important to talk about this topic with the youngest children?
1. early sensitization: Children are naturally curious and open to new ideas. By informing them about racism and diversity at an early age, we promote an awareness of differences and similarities. This helps to break down prejudices before they become entrenched.
2. promoting empathy: By reading stories and discussing different cultures and experiences, children learn to put themselves in the shoes of others. Empathy is a key skill that helps to create respectful and inclusive communities.
3. strengthening self-esteem: Children who come from ethnically or culturally diverse backgrounds benefit from having their identity and culture recognized and celebrated in education. This strengthens their self-esteem and sense of belonging.
4. preventing discrimination: By educating children about racism, we can give them the tools to recognize and actively speak out against discrimination. This promotes a culture of respect and tolerance.
5. creating an inclusive society: When children learn to value diversity and reject racism, they help to shape an inclusive society. They will take these values with them into their later lives and spread them in their communities.
