The two experts of the fine brushstroke, Reinhold and Joachim Lilie, also open their doors to visitors at Whitsun.

One specializes in oil, the other, an all-rounder, masters all techniques from drawing to the supreme discipline of watercolor. While their art is representational, it leaves room for much more. "Our pictures develop a life of their own, they tell a story, together with their viewer," explains Reinhold Lilie. This is exactly what the two artists intend with their work. And it's true: Viewing Reinhold Lilie's "Ausgedient" awakens a wide variety of sensations: Associations and memories. No wonder, because his specialty is to arrange his still lifes in an unusual way - up to the surrealistic. They leave the viewer pensive to sad, or elicit a smile. "With the paintings, I can send someone into worlds that they discover within themselves," says Reinhold Lilie.

This also applies to his brother's painterly worlds, he adds. Joachim Lilie's repertoire ranges from atmospheric landscape painting to surreal fantasy worlds and creatures, such as "The Watcher" or "The Viewpoint." The latter, a human figure trying to hold itself up with one hand in a handstand. "The figure tries to hold its point of view, to balance it, but it becomes entangled or over-anchored, anchors itself to the ground and ultimately suffers damage," the 66-year-old explains. Having a point of view does not always mean holding it persistently, he adds. Both brothers are self-taught. Both would have liked to plan their path in life differently: With a degree in art. But things turned out differently: one learned the trade of a shepherd, the other that of a glass cutter. "Joachim liked to paint from an early age; my interests were different. He even had professional lessons," Reinhold Lilie recalls. That's probably why he says of his older brother that he was his teacher. And even today, the brothers are very close as artists: "If I ever get stuck, he comes and immediately sees what's wrong. We complement each other well. It's a real stroke of luck," says Reinhold Lilie.
