The first major exhibition on the history of consumer goods production opens its doors to visitors in April.
Shipbuilding and boatbuilding have a long and unique tradition in the Hanseatic City of Wismar, as well as a lively present. The recent history of the current shipyard site has its origins in a ship repair base dating back to 1946, which still operates today as the only compact shipyard in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. The site name Mathias-Thesen-Werft - MTW for short - has made a particularly strong impression on the public consciousness, having shaped the cityscape for more than 50 years.
However, it was not only fishing, container, expedition, research and cruise ships that were launched in the Hanseatic city from 1951 onwards. Smaller boats with a special wooden design have also seen the light of day here.
The special exhibition "Packsack, deadwood, hummingbird - 70 years of folding boats from Wismar" takes a unique look at a very special Wismar product, which was produced between 1954 and 1990 as part of the Wismar shipyard's mass production of consumer goods - the folding boat. More than 77,000 of them left the production site in Kanalstraße and are still very popular today, and not just among connoisseurs.
