A film by Ilze Burkovska-Jacobsen (Norway/Latvia, 2022)

My favorite war is an animated documentary that tells the personal story of its director Ilze and her growing up in the USSR during the Cold War. It is an exciting coming-of-age story about finding one's own individual freedom, truth and loyalty.

We first meet Ilze as a little girl playing war on her grandfather's farm, then she is confronted with the horrors of war at school. Ilze lives in a field of tension between Soviet reality and the propaganda that denies what people are actually experiencing. Moreover, Ilze also learns how contrary in their beliefs are the people she loves the most. The film is about the choices a girl has to make at a very young age to become wiser and to find the courage to speak her mind.

The Latvian-born director lives and works in both Norway and Latvia. She has made eight documentary films and more than 20 hours of TV animation/documentary series.

Over the last ten years, Ilze and her production company Bivrost Film have worked on "My favorite war" as well as several animated documentary series for children with themes such as abuse and violence. She and her team won an International Emmy Award for "My Body Belongs to Me" in 2018.
