Bernstorf Castle near Grevesmühlen in West Mecklenburg is a manor house in the Neo-Renaissance style. It was built between 1879 and 1882 by the chamberlain Arthur Friedrich Carl Graf von Bernstorff according to plans by the senior architect and court architect Georg Benedict FRiedrich Wilhelm Daniel. The von Bernstorff family stayed on the estate until 1945. After that, it was used as a military hospital, elementary school and residence. The two-storey manor house is in the style of the Lowland Renaissance, also known as the Weser Renaissance, made of brick and sandstone on a fieldstone base. It was surrounded by a moat, and there is still a large park with a lake and an old atonement stone.
After it was sold in 1990, it fell into disrepair for a decade without any renovation work. Dr. Wolfgang Röhr bought the dilapidated house in 2010, and after renovations from 2012 to 2014, the family-run Schloss-Hospiz opened here. Since then, it has offered a stylish and peaceful place to accompany people and their loved ones on their final journey.
The Röhr family and the hospice welcome donations.
