"Crossed over, but the other way around!" Author reading with Rolf Barkhorn. Spring 1967: Five and a half years after the Berlin Wall was built, a family of eight set off in a fully loaded DKW station wagon from one German state to another to live there.
Spring 1967: Five and a half years after the Berlin Wall was built, a family of eight set off in a fully loaded DKW station wagon from one German state to another to live there.
When they cross the border, they don't have to fear barbed wire or automatic gunfire. Unlike many others, the family did not flee from the East to the West. They chose the opposite route - from the Federal Republic of Germany to the German Democratic Republic.
The author Rolf Barkhorn (born in 1955) experienced the move himself as an eleven-year-old. In his book, he recounts the somewhat chaotic border crossing, the family's temporary accommodation in a reception center and their first stops and impressions in their new home.
