The black redstart is bird of the year 2025. An early riser wins the race. The black redstart enriches our mornings well before sunrise. With its unconventional song, it is hard to miss and can be easily seen on rooftops. Clear the stage for the new bird of the year!
Since 1971, NABU and LBV (Landesbund für Vogel- und Naturschutz in Bayern) have chosen the bird of the year, and now the whole of Germany votes for the bird of the year in a public election. The redstart won the vote for Bird of the Year 2025.
It is one of the first birds to start singing around 70 minutes before sunrise and can be heard until after dusk. The black redstart may not be a gifted singer, but it is very persistent. And it is very adaptable. It used to be found only in the mountains, but for 250 years it has followed us into our settlement areas and is almost omnipresent.
It is a fascinating bird and it is worth getting to know it better.
