Hans Fallada | "Hoiho! The sail in the wind, to the stars, little man!"
June 15, 2024 | 7:30 pm | House of the Guest Graal-Müritz
Closing event of the Literature Week 2024

The staged reading uses selected text excerpts to illustrate the writer's close connections to Pomerania and the Baltic Sea in his life and work.
The time that the young Rudolf Ditzen, alias Hans Fallada, spent in Pomerania between 1915 and 1925 influenced his work well into the 1940s. The Pomeranian places where he lived and worked later became the settings for his novels and stories, and he transformed events and oddities into literature. As a civil servant on agricultural estates, he learned to deal with people, to listen to them; his eye for a wide variety of characters was sharpened. In addition to earning a living, he wrote several works in those years (text adapted from Sabine Koburger).

The text excerpts were selected, compiled and interpreted by Katharina Groth and Wolfgang Wagner. Both have appeared for over 30 years as actors on various stages, in film and television, and have also worked as dubbing and radio play actors for numerous projects. In 1993, they took part in the anniversary productions of "Little Man, What Now?" in Chemnitz and Neustrelitz on the occasion of Hans Fallada's 100th birthday. Since then, they have repeatedly and with growing enthusiasm - not least in cooperation with the Fallada House in Carwitz - dealt with the author's work and person. Katharina Groth and Wolfgang Wagner live as an actor couple in Berlin.

__________

The writer Hans Fallada (1893 - 1947 ) first came to Graal (now Graal-Müritz) with his family in 1906 at the age of 13, a place that suited their love of nature and their need for peace and quiet. They rented a typical local Büdnerei and spent three summers there. In his book "Damals bei uns daheim", published in 1941, Fallada describes the wonderful vacation weeks on the Baltic Sea in detail.
