The Zerrenthiner Wiesen between Krugsdorf, Koblentz, Zerrenthin and Breitenstein are by far the largest of the five inland salt marshes found in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.
Far away from the coastal resorts and groynes, the rising, salty deep water here inland leads to the occurrence of salt-tolerant plant species such as beach aster, beach trident, beach milkwort, salt bunge and common saltwort - all species that originate in maritime ecosystems.
In addition, the moor grassland used as meadow and pasture is an important migration and resting place for golden plover, greylag goose, crane, whimbrel, ruff, curlew, curlew and lapwing, among others. For the latter, the Zerrenthin meadows were once attractive breeding grounds. In the near future, voluntary changes in land use should restore their attractiveness as a breeding area.
The walk through the approximately 450-hectare project area leads along the inland salt marshes between Düwelsdamm and the long meadow path. There will also be an optional moor drilling, which will make the development of the moor since the last ice age tangible.
