Reading & discussion in German | Moderation: Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Muno (University of Rostock) | Livestream & media library at www.twitch.tv/lithausrostock
Winner of the European Book Prize
Can the right-wing populist movements in Europe be explained by the way the continent dealt with its history after the last great war? Géraldine Schwarz, a Franco-German who grew up in France, delicately links her family history with the great history and places rich source material in revealing contexts. During her research, she came across the involvement of both her German and French grandparents in the Nazi and Vichy regimes and sees the two sides dealing with history in very different ways. In the run-up to the European elections, Géraldine Schwarz discusses these differences, remembrance work and its significance for the future of a democratic Europe with political scientist Prof. Wolfgang Muno.
Géraldine Schwarz, born in Strasbourg in 1974, is a Franco-German journalist and documentary filmmaker. The daughter of a German father and a French mother, she describes herself as a "child of Europe". She grew up in France and has lived in Berlin for many years. She worked as a Germany correspondent for Agence France Presse (afp) for many years and now publishes in various international media. Her book "Die Gedächtnislosen", written in French, was published in France in fall 2017 (French title: "Les amnésiques") and has since been translated into more than ten languages. The German translation by Christian Ruzicska was published by Verlag Secession. The author has received several awards, including the European Book Prize in 2018 and the German Winfried Prize of the City of Fulda for International Understanding and Peace in 2019.
The event will be moderated by Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Muno (Institute of Political Science at the University of Rostock) and will be held in German.
