or 50 years ago - on March 11, 1973 - the graphic artist, painter and illustrator Herbert Bartholomäus died in Ludwigslust. After his studies he was mainly engaged in commercial graphics, but also drew, for example, book illustrations, stage sets, theater posters, watercolors and oil paintings. From 25.04. to 26.05. various works by Herbert Bartholomäus will be shown in an exhibition.
On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of his death, we would like to honor a special Ludwigslust artist. To one or the other the name "Master Bartho" is surely a term - meant is Herbert Bartholomäus.
He was born in Berlin on October 7, 1910. After his studies at the Berlin Academy of Arts he was mainly engaged in commercial art. After the 2nd World War, he then came to Ludwigslust. Herbert Bartholomäus designed various advertising graphics, e.g. labels for liqueur and schnapps bottles, advertising drawings for canned sausages and cigarettes. But he escaped from this work again and again and remained true to art. After 1945 he drew the book cover for Willi Bredel's novella "Das Vermächtnis des Frontsoldaten". That was the beginning of many children's and youth books that owe their outer appearance to him and which he also illustrated to a large extent. He also designed stage sets, theater posters and programs, as well as watercolors and oil paintings. Herbert Bartholomäus also designed the first postage stamps for Mecklenburg-Vorpommern after the war, which were then printed in Ludwigslust.

From April 25 to May 26, various works from the estate of Herbert Bartholomäus will be shown as part of an exhibition at Ludwigslust Town Hall. These were given to the Ludwigslust town archives 4 years ago by his daughters. The exhibition offers you the possibility to get an overview of the manifold work of this artist.
