The excursion into the lowland area leads to the inland salt marshes between Düwelsdamm and Langer Wiesenweg south of Koblentz and the two lakes. A peat bog drilling will also take place again as an example of how the fen has developed since the last ice age.
Meeting point: 10:30 am, south of the poplar grove at Düwelsdamm, the gravel path between Zerrenthin and Koblentz: https://maps.app.goo.gl/8RVh9z4u3ueBLSfx8

Duration: approx. 2.5 hours
The Zerrenthiner Wiesen between Krugsdorf, Koblentz, Zerrenthin and Breitenstein is by far the largest of the five inland salt marshes found in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. The salt content in the moor is so high in places that salt was still being extracted up until the 18th century. Far away from imperial baths and groynes, the rising, salty deep water here in the inland leads to the occurrence of salt-tolerant plant species (halophytes), such as beach aster, beach trident, beach milkwort, salt bunge or common saltbush - all species that have their origin in maritime ecosystems.
In addition, the moor grassland used as meadow and pasture is an important migration and resting place for numerous waders (limicoles), such as the golden plover, whimbrel, ruff, curlew and lapwing. The Zerrenthin meadows were once attractive breeding grounds for the latter. The aim is to improve their attractiveness as a breeding area in the future by voluntarily adapting their use.
