We cordially invite you to the event to mark 80 years since the end of the war. There will be a lecture by Dr. Hubertus Knabe followed by a get-together with drinks.
May 8, 2025 marks the 80th anniversary of the end of the Second World War. This day marks the end of National Socialist tyranny, which claimed millions of lives. The end of the criminal Nazi regime was undoubtedly a liberation for Europe. However, half of Europe - and half of Germany - went from the frying pan into the fire: National Socialist tyranny was followed by Communist dictatorship. In his book "Day of Liberation?", historian Hubertus Knabe, a prominent expert on the history of the GDR, vividly recalls this often neglected aspect of the end of the war and the associated suffering of the German population. While West Germany achieved democracy and freedom in the post-war period, many East Germans experienced a new dictatorship. The terror of the post-war period in East Germany created the conditions for the establishment of the SED dictatorship in East Germany, which lasted more than 40 years.
Why is May 8th viewed differently in East and West Germany? What are the consequences of the different experiences in East and West on the self-image as well as on the historical and political culture in Germany to this day? What lessons can we learn from the experiences of the totalitarian systems of the 20th century for democracy in our time?
