St. John Passion
The performance of the St. John Passion by Joh. Seb. Bach will be a highlight of church music in 2024 - and not just in Güstrow. Countless choirs around the world will perform the St. John Passion this year, as the first performance of this unique setting of the Passion story based on the Evangelist John took place on Good Friday 1724, exactly 300 years ago, in the Nikolaikirche in Leipzig.
With this work, Bach created music that is both incomprehensibly grand and impressively human. The work focuses on the idea of redemption. Jesus' death is not intended to frighten us, but to move us to reflect on what has happened.
The dramatically charged choral scenes in particular are intended to shake us up. On the one hand, the choir takes on the role of the voice of the people and public opinion. On the other hand, it sings the moving Passion chorales and represents the congregation.
