Film biography from 2021 about the poet Thomas Brasch
The GDR is still young, but Thomas Brasch (Albrecht Schuch) no longer fits in. It is above all his father Horst (Jörg Schüttauf) who wants to help build the new German state. But Thomas, the eldest son, would rather become a writer. Thomas is a dreamer, an obsessive and a rebel. His very first play is banned and he is soon expelled from film school. When Soviet tanks rolled through Prague in 1968, Brasch protested with his girlfriend Sanda (Ioana Iacob) and other students with a leafleting campaign on the streets of Berlin - with unforeseen consequences ...
The film contributes to the rediscovery of an artist who embodied the German-German divide like few before and after him. Brasch could not stay in the GDR and he did not want to be in the West. Inspired by his work, the film tells of the contested worlds in the life of a radical non-conformist: Brasch's love-hate relationship with his father, his deep affection for his siblings and his restless desire for the women in his life. Shot in black and white, the film alternates breathlessly between dream and reality, between truth and fiction.
