When the phone rings, the young Bernstein is still in bed with his lover, the clarinettist David Oppenheimer. Carnegie Hall has asked if he could stand in as conductor in the evening. It would be his premiere at this world-famous concert hall. He euphorically accepts the challenge - and triumphs. "Maestro", the film biography about one of the most important and best-known conductors and composers of the 20th century, begins with this decisive moment. It also tells the story of how Bernstein meets the young Broadway starlet Felicia Montealegre at a house party. The two marry and have children. Cooper is particularly interested in the conductor's turbulent private life, the back and forth of his marriage, his affairs with young men and his need for recognition. But of course the focus on the maestro's personality allows conclusions to be drawn about his artistic work.

And just like Bernstein, who stormed the stages as if they were made for him, Cooper enthusiastically draws on the great cinematic repertoire in his film and once again puts himself in the running for an Oscar with his portrayal of Bernstein.
