In 1820, Caspar David Friedrich received a visit from the Russian Tsar and his State Councillor Vasily Zhukovsky in his Dresden studio. Ten years later, he created four paintings that can only be seen by lamplight. In the instructions sent to St. Petersburg, which were in no way inferior to those of a Swedish furniture store today, Friedrich described the apparatus that was to effectively demonstrate the path from worldly to heavenly music.
