Fort Dömitz (exhibition “Im Grunde“)

The bulwark of fort Dömitz overlooks the river Elbe by the city of Dömitz. Its walls saw princes, army commanders, and kings come and go and inspired poets. Nature lovers can find the exciting exhibition “Im Grunde” and the visitor centre of the biosphere reserve “Elbe-Schaalsee” here.

Fort Dömitz is located on the “Mecklenburger Elbufer” and is one of not that many very well preserved forts of the flat country of the 16th century in northern Germany. Its form of a pentagon and bastions and casemates show the impressive embankment architecture of the renaissance. It was built on the remains of a fort from the 13th century from 1559-1565 and was used militarily until the late 19th century. The five bastions and casemates, the armoury, the old main watch and the house of commanders give an insight into the defence mechanisms of some centuries. Because of the specialties of the building and the uniquely great condition, the fort was listed in 1975.

Exhibitions: “Gestern, Heute; Morgen” und “Im Grunde”

In fort Dömitz by the right side of the “Elbufer“, two exhibitions in the visitor centre of the UNESCO biosphere reserve ”Flusslandschaft Elbe Mecklenburg-Vorpommern” invite guests welcomingly. The exhibition “Mensch und Biospähre” can be found in the former armoury of the fort. On over 100 square kilometres you will discover, which goals biosphere reserves want to achieve, how they work and what the transnational UNESCO biosphere reserve “Flusslandschaft Elbe” can offer.

Visitors can find a multimedia exhibition in the casemates of the remodelled bastion “Greif”: “Im Grunde” - the earth lies to our feet, because we stand on it! Did you actually ever think of that? The origin of many things of our daily life that we build or sit on, the reason of why we can be alive – water, food, housing - come from way down in the ground: ground water, sand, loam, and our ground as well. In this exhibition, you can discover many important things about the base of our existence and our current life quality!
