Smetana / Prize-winning composition / Conductor: Marcus Bosch Norddeutsche Philharmonie Rostock / Bedřich Smetana: Má Vlast (My Fatherland, 1874 - 1879) Encore
When Bedřich Smetana began to write tone poems, they were probably based on the model of Franz Liszt's compositions, as Liszt was well known as the father of the genre. The Bohemian later said that he wanted to outdo the master with his own symphonic poems. Má Vlast goes back to the idea of depicting themes from his homeland in a cycle of tone poems - as an orchestral counterpart to his confessional opera Libussa. Originally intended as a tetralogy, Smetana later composed two further parts. When the complete cycle was premiered in Prague in 1882, the now completely deaf composer enjoyed great success with this work, which is characterized by national themes and quickly conquered the concert stages with its impressively fresh musical design, especially the Moldau, which is often performed separately from the cycle.
The concert, conducted by Marcus Bosch, will then feature another prize-winning composition from the competition Zugabe 3'33'', which the chief conductor initiated last year for students at the hmt Rostock.
