Stages: 14 | On this bike path it glitters and splashes around almost every bend. The Müritz - Germany's largest inland lake - is the centerpiece of the route. - Tour tips: Residence towns of Ludwigslust and Neustrelitz, Mecklenburg's Greater and Lesser Lake District with Müritz National Park, resort architecture on Usedom
Rail connections: Lüneburg, Ludwigslust, Waren (Müritz), Neubrandenburg, Wolgast, etc.
Starting from Lüneburg, the cycle path leads through the Elbe meadows to the Griesen area. In Ludwigslust, the magnificent castle shines in the landscape of paddocks and fields. In Neustadt-Glewe, the medieval fortifications watch over the gateway to the Lewitz. The bird sanctuary is home to many canals and fish ponds, and the Elde River is particularly inviting for swimming and paddling.
In Röbel/Müritz, cyclists encounter Germany's largest inland lake. A charming contrast to the lively harbor town of Waren (Müritz) is offered by the tranquility of the Müritz National Park, interrupted only by the rustling of the leaves of ancient trees. Get off the saddle and up to the Käflingsberg tower - from the 55-meter-high vantage point, you can admire the green wonder from the sea eagle's perspective.
The lock town of Mirow between the Müritz and Havel rivers with its castle island and 3-queen palace is a mecca for leisure captains, paddlers and canoeists. Wonderful picnic areas and bathing spots are hidden everywhere. Behind the former residential town of Neustrelitz with its star-shaped city layout, the Müritz National Park opens up to the terraced landscape of Lake Tollensee. At the northern tip of this lake is the city of Neubrandenburg with its well-preserved fortifications and four magnificent city gates. The tour continues to Vorpommern. The first town on the Szczecin Lagoon is Ueckermünde. Behind Anklam, the Peene River is crossed and the cyclists reach the Island of Usedom. The home stretch provides a glittering welcome: Baltic resorts nestle like snow-white pearls between the velvety green dune forests and the dreamy beach of the unspoiled island. The bike route ends in Wolgast on the Peene River.
Route characteristics:
The predominantly low-traffic Mecklenburg Lakes Cycle Route runs mostly on paved farm roads and concrete slab paths, but also on developed cycle paths, which can be asphalt or water-bound. In sections, the route leads over sandy paths and cobblestone roads.
The Mecklenburg Lakes Cycle Route is signposted throughout.
