On May 4, 2024, the town of Bergen auf Rügen, together with Theodor Billroth's family, would once again like to commemorate its most famous historical resident and his achievements. In this context, various speakers will present Billroth's medical work, his family, his love of music, the Billroth House in Vienna and Bergen as his birthplace in the form of a public conference.

The internationally renowned physician Theodor Billroth was born in Bergen auf Rügen on April 26, 1829. The town of Bergen auf Rügen keeps the memory of its most famous resident alive by naming a street and planting an oak tree named after Billroth, among other things. The former birthplace of the famous surgeon has also been preserved for posterity and became the responsibility of the German Society of Surgery in 1998.
