Lecture by Dr. Peter Danker-Carstensen, historian, Stralsund
"The end of the war in Stralsund in 1945. From the diaries of Waltraut Adler and Käthe Rieck."
The end of the war 80 years ago was a historical caesura that marked the end of the darkest chapter in German history. With the occupation of Stralsund by the Red Army on May 1, 1945, the inhabitants of the city and the many refugees who had already been stuck in Stralsund for several weeks were no longer in danger of being drawn into direct warfare. The memoirs and diaries of Waltraut Adler (1896-1994) and Käthe Rieck (1902-2004) provide a very personal account of the dramatic events from the summer of 1944 and spring of 1945 to the fall and end of 1945. The diaries edited by Dr. Danker-Carstensen have been published by Edition Pommern as Volume 1 of the series "Beiträge zur Stralsunder Geschichte" ("Contributions to Stralsund's History") founded by the Historical Society. The publication can be purchased at a price of €15 directly after the lecture as well as in local bookshops and directly from the publisher (Frankenstraße 53, 18439 Stralsund).
