Castles and Manors

Castle Hotels, Events and Culture

The region between the Baltic Sea and the Lake District is rich in noble manor houses from medieval times surrounded by magnificent gardens. The best thing is that many of them open their doors and invite guests to enjoy them - as an elegant restaurant, a stylish castle hotel or a special concert venue.

The region between the Baltic Sea and the Lake District is rich in noble manor houses from medieval times surrounded by magnificent gardens. The best thing is that many of them open their doors and invite guests to enjoy them - as an elegant restaurant, a stylish castle hotel or a special concert venue.

A castle, a park, a lake - this romantic combination is more common in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern than in any other European region. Between green hills, dense forests and colorful meadows, some 2,000 castles, manor houses and stately homes lie picturesquely nestled in romantic parks and the vast landscape between the Baltic Sea coast and the Mecklenburg Lake District .

Approximately 300 of these stately homes invite visitors to stroll, relax and enjoy themselves as museums, concert venues and event locations or as stylish inns. Some of them are also very popular as romantic wedding venues.

The topics at a glance:

The Most Beautiful Castles

The most impressive residences were left behind by the Dukes of Mecklenburg. The Renaissance palace of Güstrow, the baroque complex of the town of Ludwigslust, Schwerin Castle as a prime example of romantic historicism and the classicist palace of Hohenzieritz were all built primarily for representative purposes. This was followed by entire city ensembles such as Putbus and Neustrelitz, as well as noble summer residences and imposing hunting lodges such as those found in Granitz and Gelbensande.

These grand and princely estates offer visitors fascinating insights and views - from panoramic views of the Baltic Sea Island of Rügen to the 1000-year history of the Mecklenburg dukes, including the most extensive collection of Dutch paintings from the Golden Age in Europe.

In the Realm of the Flower Queen

At Mirow Castle, the memory of Princess Sophie Charlotte and her enthusiasm for botany blossoms can still be witnessed in a stirring exhibition. In 1761, George III of Great Britain chose the 17-year-old from the Duchy of Mecklenburg-Strelitz as his wife. Today, the world knows her primarily by her nickname “The Queen of Flowers”.

In the exhibition at Mirow Castle, the life of the Queen Charlotte is told in a modern way. Of course, you can also see the flower named after the duchy: a single strelitzia stands in a vase right by the cash register, paying tribute to the "Queen of Flowers".

Tip: Annual pass "8 auf einem Streich“
The jewels of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern's castles and art collections can be explored with the annual pass "8 in one go". With this discovery pass, visitors have one admission to each of the houses of the State Palaces, Gardens and Art Collections MV. The ticket can be purchased on the first visit to one of the participating houses and is valid for one year.

Visit castles and gardens

The most magnificent castles from Schwerin to Hohenzieritz are now in the care of the state. They are considered cultural-historical jewels, venerable witnesses of time and outstanding storytellers.

Spend the Night in the Castle

In many former residences of princes and landed gentry, vacation guests today find stylishly furnished apartments and rooms, often with magnificent terraces and gardens. The range of vacation accommodations extends from small country house idylls for two people to family-oriented organic hotels, equestrian farms and monastery hostels with wellness and golf hotels in the upper luxury class. The latter can be found, for example, in the neo-baroque Fleesensee Castle in the Mecklenburg Lake District.

Passion Manor House in the Peene Valley

The Peene Valley in the heart of Vorpommern is also full of such cultural treasures. The romantic Hotel Schloss Neetzow, in the style of English country estates, is one of the most striking manors designed and built in historicist-romantic architectural concept. At the Liepen Manor, with country-style rooms, the principles of sustainability are closely followed and the restaurant's cuisine is enhanced with herbs and salads from its own harvest. Quilow Moated Castle, a Renaissance building and monument of national value, has been renovated and will reopen in 2020 for exhibitions, concerts, readings and workshops. The three houses are connected in the most beautiful manner by the Flusslandschaft Peene Valley Nature Park.

Events in Castles

Music, dancing, good food and socializing have always been a vital part of high society. Today, the facilities are available to the general public and serve as a unique backdrop for unforgettable cultural events.

Many manor and castle lords open their doors and lure guests into their impressive historic walls for the “MidsummerRemise” in June and the Castle Autumn with a diverse cultural program, while the initiative “Zu Tisch bei Freunden” invites individual travellers to enjoy local culinary delights and engage in stimulating conversations in Mecklenburg's ParkLand. The Festspiele MV brings life to numerous castles such as Ulrichshusen, Schwiessel and Kummerow, and the Schwerin Castle Festival in June and July takes place against the imposing background of Schwerin Castle.
