Lecture & Science

Alumni Fellow Lecture and panel discussion as part of the interdisciplinary symposium "Zeiten und Wende. Scientific Reflections and Interventions"

with Professor Dr. Mathias Grote (University of Greifswald, Department of History), Privatdozentin Dr. Caroline Rothauge (University of Hamburg, Department of History) and Professor Dr. Michael Stolz (University of Bern, Institute of German Studies)

"Zeitenwende" was the word of the year in 2022, and the term has resonated widely in the German-speaking public sphere ever since. But what is meant by 'times', are they actually 'turning' and, if so, how? What is the singular moment of change that is assumed? What role do current contexts play in identifying 'changing times' and do these go hand in hand with specific perspectives on the past and future? Are there continuities in the 'turn' or is everything in a state of flux and change irreversible? How and in what ways have 'turning points' been and are being narrated? A panel discussion with Fellows, alumni/alumnae and other interested parties will explore the current and historical dimensions in greater depth. The three panelists will contribute ideas from the fields of history, natural sciences and literature.

Mathias Grote studied philosophy and biology. In 2023, Mathias Grote was appointed Professor of the History of Knowledge at the Institute of History at the University of Greifswald.
Caroline Rothauge studied Applied Cultural Studies, Modern and Contemporary History and Journalism at the Universities of Lüneburg and Santiago de Compostela. She is currently at the University of Hamburg.

In the academic year 2021/22, all three were Fellows at the Alfried Krupp Wissenschaftskolleg Greifswald.
