Gabriel Carvin (Gérard Depardieu), the most famous chef in France and a gourmet with heart and soul, no longer has any appetite for life. With all the culinary career feats, his own family has always come up short. Even the prestigious third crystal star, which his noble restaurant "Monsieur Quelqu'un" is the only restaurant from France to receive, leaves only a stale taste. Especially when it is awarded by, of all people, the restaurant critic with whom his wife is cheating on him. For years, Gabriel has conquered his occasional sadness with various delicacies. It is not until he lands himself under the filleting knife after a heart attack that the corpulent kitchen professional finally takes control of his life. He travels to Japan to track down a former cooking adversary and uncover the secret of umami, a mysterious fifth flavor. Along with delicious noodle soups, old rivalries, and new friendship, what awaits Gabriel in faraway Japan is the realization that there is room in life for more than one passion, and that it's never too late to be part of a family.
