Fellow Lecture by Professor Dr. Astrid M. Eckert (Fellow of the Alfried Krupp Wissenschaftskolleg Greifswald)

With the fall of the Wall, "the nature conservation heritage of the GDR ... lay in the street," wrote the environmental activist Reimar Gilsenbach. In the months that followed, East German conservationists turned this heritage into the GDR's national park program. When the fireworks went off in front of the Reichstag in Berlin on October 3, 1990, five East German national parks, six biosphere reserves and three nature parks - 4.5% of GDR territory - were irrevocably enshrined in the Unification Treaty. Environmental-historical perspectives are still rare in contemporary research on unification and transformation. The lecture uses the example of the national park program to explore the role of landscapes and nature conservation in the "long history of the 'Wende'". The national park program was not only offensive nature conservation in times of upheaval, it was also an energetic attempt to help shape the emerging unity.

Astrid M. Eckert is Professor of German and European History at Emory University in Atlanta (USA). She publishes on issues of contemporary history, most recently the study Zonenrandgebiet. West Germany and the Iron Curtain (Chr. Links Verlag, 2022). Among other things, the book provides an environmental history of the inner-German border. She is continuing this environmental history focus with the new project on the national park program. Astrid M. Eckert is a regular guest in Germany, including with a Humboldt Research Fellowship for experienced researchers and as a Fellow at the American Academy Berlin. In the academic year 2023/24, Astrid M. Eckert is a Senior Fellow at the Alfried Krupp Wissenschaftskolleg Greifswald.

Moderation: Professor Dr. Dr. Martin Gorke
