The Landesjugendorchester Berlin presents Gustav Mahler's 1st Symphony: a work that was celebrated as a bold and innovative step in symphonic music - and has lost none of its power in 2024. The opening sounds, which have been described as the "sound of nature", create an almost mystical atmosphere. In the following movements, Mahler's ability to interweave folk-song-like melodies with dark irony and dramatic depth unfolds. The triumphant conclusion, celebrated by contemporaries as the "fanfare of life", leaves the audience impressed and thoughtful.
The Landesjugendorchester Berlin is a project of the Landesmusikrat Berlin e.V. and was founded in 1987 to promote young musicians. There are two projects per year, each of which concludes with a concert. Conductors provide young people with insights into the practice of interpretation and their very different styles. Each concert features a new conductor, including Michael Jurowski, Jac van Steen, Gürer Aykal, Christoph Altstaedt and, last year, Lancelot Fuhry.
