Lady Windermere is held in high esteem in London's high society, since she - having grown up very morally strict - measures people's behavior by strict moral standards. At her birthday party, she is told that her husband is having an affair with a woman of dubious reputation, a certain Mrs. Erlynne. Lady Windermere then secretly leaves the house to go to Lord Darlington, who has just confessed his love for her.
