Young positions in art curated by Broschewitz and Goldberg

From mid-May, the GOLDWERK GALERIE in Rostock is showing the exhibition "respectively. Young Positions in Art curated by Broschewitz and Goldberg" (18.05. - 13.07.2024) with paintings, ceramics and sculptures by eight artists. Gallery owner Mathias Goldberg and artist Carlo Leopold Broschewitz are jointly curating an exhibition at the gallery for the fifth time.

Once again, the focus is on fresh and up-and-coming artists, because they ask questions, negotiate existential themes, create meaning and thus take a look into the past, present and future. The title "respectively" brings on board those who visit the exhibition, or rather, more precisely, enjoy it; those who view or receive the works of art - because it is only through or rather in the perception that meaning is created for the viewer when elements are placed in relation to one another. And where, if not in young positions in art, does reciprocal relationship work take place in a creative way - in relation and reference, i.e. context and context, i.e. in relation and connection to the world? Can such a title be explained? Yes, otherwise no.

The artists

Wondrous world meets form and color

Carlo Leopold Broschewitz| Born 1980 | Painting, ceramics (Kambs)

... creates a densely filled world of wondrous forms and colors: dreamy, intuitive, fairytale-like, unexpectedly unforced; a structure of form and narrative, full of self-determination, processuality and enraptured realities - these are encounters between the human and the animal.

Playing with the recognizable and the unrecognizable

Wilhelm Frederking| Born 1982 | Painting (Leipzig)
... "is interested in the hidden, the enigmatic, the mystical. What you don't see or understand is what attracts me and where my imagination sets in." His works are characterized by an experimental joy in combining graphic and painterly techniques on various materials in order to stimulate the questioning of the (in)visible in the world.

Blurring the boundaries between reality and fiction

Larissa Rosa Lackner| Born 1987 | Painting (Berlin)
... "paints her pictures quickly, she doesn't allow herself much time to think while painting, which makes them immediate. The colors pop. The small scenes of everyday life form a larger picture. Relationships, isolation, care, intimacy, sexuality, security, distance: the private becomes political." (Hannah del Mestre) Lackner is a Karl Schmidt-Rottluff scholarship holder in 2023.

Ceramics with a unique charisma

Elke Sada| Born 1965 | Ceramics (Leipzig)
... experimented and searched for many years before she found the objective form and painterly surface for her series. The ceramics are expressive and yet absolutely usable. She builds vessels from chance and play, painting and material as well as free dancing inspiration: as lively as they are colorful. She follows the invitation to diversity with relish and always in search of new steps.

Detailed pictorial worlds with a deep ground

Martin Schuster| Born 1986 | Painting (Leipzig)
... has a metaphorical visual language that takes us on a journey into fantastic worlds of thought. Each work seems to tell a story, a new facet of human existence and experience, about a desire that has been fulfilled or overcome. These visualized longings demand contemplation and concentration.

Intensity, absurdity and irony meet

Caro Suerkemper| Born 1964 | Ceramics (Berlin)
... allows herself to be challenged by traditional hierarchies, conventions, rituals and traditions to shake up her celebrations in a creative way. Her sculptures must be "paced out, scanned with the eyes, immersed in the obscenely enchanted, pleasure, pain, ecstasy and asceticism experienced and felt like a shiver of knowledge" (J-C Ammann).

Everyday life worthy of representation with rough edges

Marlon Wobst| Born 1980 | Painting (Berlin)
... draws his inspiration from his immediate surroundings, his own past and the flood of images in the digital world. His figures retain a connection to everyday life and the mundane despite and because of the healthy dose of comedy and scurrility - "a casual commentary on the smooth, deliberately perfect" (FN Karrasch).

(Ir)regularities between calm and irritation

Ulrike Zabel| Born 1988 | Painting (Leipzig)
... is able to keep her works in a state between calm and irritation - whether strictly rhythmic or surprisingly playful: "The irregularities in the regularity betray the drawing hand, the body behind it. For drawing is manual work, and so it is not surprising that it is always reminiscent of textiles" (M Albert).
