The response has been very positive. Even at the opening, it was clear that the topic was of great interest to both locals and visitors from further afield.
In 1874, the railroad not only gave Dömitz one of the longest and most impressive railroad bridges in Germany, but also a connection to the Wittenberge-Lüneburg Railway. The former line ran from Wittenberge via Cumlosen, Lanz, Lenzen and Polz to Dömitz and on via Dannenberg to Lüneburg. Individual relics of this almost forgotten route can still be found today.
Previously unseen pictures and plans of the route as well as a detailed diorama of Cumlosen station measuring almost six meters in length are part of the special exhibition. This was created as a project by the Traditionsgemeinschaft Deutsche Reichsbahn Wittenberge and the "Alte Burg" Wittenberge town museum to mark the anniversary of the construction of the railroad line.
"We are delighted to be able to show the exhibition in Dömitz. Supplemented by our own exhibits, it provides a comprehensive and exciting insight into the region's railroad history," says Mandy Botzler, Head of Tourism and Culture for the town of Dömitz.
The special exhibition can be visited at the Dömitz Fortress Museum until March 30, 2025.
The special exhibition was supported by the Dömitz citizens' initiative "Trucks out" and the Dömitz Gallery.
