A lecture by Dr. Fred Ruchhöft
Fred Ruchhöft at the Bergen Town Museum on Rügen about the Slavic maritime trading center of Ralswiek. Archaeological excavations were carried out in Ralswiek from the late 1960s until the fall of communism. Initially, three well-preserved Slavic boat wrecks caused quite a stir. This was followed a few years later by excavations by the GDR Academy of Sciences in the area of the settlement and the burial ground. There was a significant find of oriental coins. Soon it was also said that a harbor had been found. This was reported in many publications, including international ones. A critical re-examination revealed that this harbor did not exist. Many other details from the Slavic-Viking history of the oldest place on Rügen must also be assessed differently today.
The lecture will provide an entertaining overview of the scientific entanglements from Ralswiek.
