A musical play about resistance, faith and an impossible love
A man in resistance. A woman who loves him. An exchange of letters that puts hope and pain into words - and a story that is still moving today.
"Bonhoeffer - Tragik einer Liebe" is a musical play that gets under your skin: intense, touching, historically based and frighteningly topical. With this impressive production, the ensemble duett zu dritt brings the dramatic relationship between the theologian and Nazi resistance fighter Dietrich Bonhoeffer and his fiancée Maria von Wedemeyer to the stage, while at the same time shedding light on central aspects of Bonhoeffer's theology and ethics.
Developed in Berlin and Bern and premiered in June 2023 at the German Protestant Church Congress in Nuremberg, the play has since toured nationwide. The production combines drama, music, historical sources and contemporary reflections to create a dense Gesamtkunstwerk that leaves a lasting impression.
The focus is not only on the tragic love of two young people during the turmoil of the Second World War - but also on Bonhoeffer's consistent advocacy of justice, truth and humanity. As early as 1933, he publicly opposed the persecution of the Jews and later became involved in the resistance against the Nazi regime. His execution in Flossenbürg concentration camp in April 1945, just a few weeks before the end of the war, marked the dramatic end of a courageous life and a hope for a common future.
Deborah Buehlmann, lawyer, actress and author, embodies Maria von Wedemeyer with deep empathy. Together with Samuel Jersak, pianist, composer and music producer, she forms the duo duett zu dritt. Jersak's musical compositions create the emotional space in which the letters, thoughts and inner conflicts of the protagonists come to life.
"Bonhoeffer - Tragedy of a Love" strikes a chord with the times. It makes the past tangible, the present understandable and opens our eyes to a shared, human future. For all those who are concerned with questions of civil courage, faith and love - or are simply looking for a theater experience that touches and resonates.
