with Dr. Monika Schneikart (Greifswald), Professor Dr. Thomas Stamm-Kuhlmann (Greifswald) and Professor Dr. Monika Unzeitig (Greifswald)

The Greifswald-born (early Baroque) poet Sibylla Schwarz (1621-1638) created her poetic paradise against the adversities of her time, determined by the turmoil of the Thirty Years' War and the restrictions on female poetry. Deeply rooted in the Lutheran faith and embracing the latest literary trends, she wrote an extensive body of poetry that proved to be on a par with contemporary poetry. In contrast to previous research on Schwarz, which has primarily focused on her works, this volume gives preference to the necessary cultural-historical contextualization of her poetry. The twelve interdisciplinary contributions examine the cultural concepts associated with the idea of paradise in Schwarz's oeuvre: Garden art, piety, longing for nature, country and city life, this world and the hereafter. Following on from the metaphorical radiance of the idea of paradise, equally broad contexts of her poetry are taken into the focus of the investigations: rich European, Dutch, medical-historical, literary, art and music-historical references.

The volume of essays Ein Jrdisch Paradeiß - Die Dichterin Sibylla Schwarz und ihrer Zeit is based on a series of lectures of the same title organized by the Sibylla Schwarz Society to mark the 400th anniversary of the poet's birth in 2021. It is published in the Early Modern World series by Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht Verlag. The editors are former members of the University of Greifswald Dr. Monika Schneikart, Prof. Dr. Thomas Stamm-Kuhlmann and Prof. Dr. Monika Unzeitig. Greifswald authors are prominently represented among the contributors.
