Ólafur Elíasson - Space is Process
Film screening followed by a discussion with cathedral pastor Dr. Tilman Beyrich
Greifswald Cathedral is getting new colored choir windows based on designs by Icelandic artist Ólafur Elíasson. The designs are based on works by Caspar David Friedrich.
In the run-up to the inauguration of the cathedral windows on 7 April, we would like to use this documentary to get to know the artist and his work better and talk to cathedral pastor Tilman Beyrich about his encounter with Elíasson and how this extraordinary stroke of luck came about for the cathedral. The film follows the media-shy artist from 2004 to 2009 and is a unique, intimate portrait of one of the most influential artists of our time. But the film goes far beyond a portrait and strives to understand Elíasson in his artistic mission: To create installations that change the viewer's environment and thus their state of mind. By integrating the beauty of "nature" into the urban cityscape, he creates urban oases and spaces that open up our senses, challenge our notions of an authentic experience of nature and encourage reflection on public space.
