by Gerhard Marcks (1889 - 1981) as part of the 24th Long Night of Art
Gerhard Marcks (1889-1981) was already preoccupied with the motif of the crane at the age of sixteen. Over the course of his career, he produced a number of sketches of the imposing birds, as well as prints and a total of five sculptural versions.
The sculptor's interest was multifaceted. He was well versed in ornithology, knew the symbolic meanings of the crane and above all appreciated its form as a sculptural challenge.
To mark the fifth anniversary of the B14, Marcks' cranes are moving back to the Baltic Sea.
