Literary Symposium

In 1864, Denmark suffered a traumatic defeat in the war against Prussia, which had a powerful impact on the Danish culture of remembrance. In Germany, this war is largely forgotten today. 160 years after these events, a look at literary war landscapes in Europe is more topical than it has been for a long time. Starting with the question of how 1864 is negotiated in the literatures of the two countries, the conference will broaden the view beyond the Danish-German context. Which linguistic and visual worlds do literatures use to deal with the suffering on the battlefields and its consequences?
