Martensmann Festival
Lübeck - Schönberg - Rehna - Schwerin
on November 9, 2024
In the Hanseatic city of Lübeck, the Martensmann loads his carriage with a 100-liter barrel of wine and sets off for the Mecklenburg capital Schwerin. On the way, he stops in Schönberg and Rehna. The people of Schönberg welcome him with a parade through the town, while the people of Rehna celebrate the event late into the night. The next day, the journey continues to Schwerin, where the Martensmann presents the barrel of wine to the Lord Mayor Rico Badenschier.
Further information on the history of this traditional event can be found on the town's website:

The Martensmann is also part of UNESCO's intangible cultural heritage. Since 1520, documents have documented the delivery of a barrel of wine from Lübeck to Schwerin by the Martensmann. The custom is a symbol of a vibrant civil society. The resumption of the tradition after the political change in 1991 and the interest of the population in the reunified region show the importance of the Martensmann as a historical and contemporary figure of identification. The transnational custom has been connecting communities and associations from Schleswig-Holstein and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern since 1991.
