We are delighted to be part of the "LETsDOK" documentary film festival again this year. The documentary film festival LETsDOK 2024 presents over 300 documentary films throughout Germany, which captivate audiences with their unique ability to capture real stories and topics. In contrast to feature films, documentaries offer an unadulterated insight into reality and tell authentic stories of people who embody courage, determination and passion. These films show the diversity of human life and inspire us to look beyond our own horizons.

FACING TIME

We are showing the special documentary "Facing Time" by director Annett Ilijew.

We have invited camerawoman Ines Thomsen to the subsequent film discussion.

Facing Time is a documentary film about the multi-award-winning photographer Michael Ruetz, who is considered a master of the moment. His iconic photographs shape the image we have of the young FRG and GDR. The film delves deep into Ruetz's unique perspective on the world of photography and shows how he not only captures moments with his pictures, but also tells stories. He captures the crows over Auschwitz and is the only one to press the shutter release when Beate Klarsfeld slaps Chancellor Kiesinger at the CDU party conference in 1968. He realizes that "the moment is very short. But afterwards, years of events are hidden behind it". The film shows how Ruetz' captures time in his photographs and how he continues to work as a chronicler and master of German photography. Facing Time is a tribute to his art and a reflection on the power of images to tell stories and preserve memories. And Michael Ruetz has no plans to stop.

* Annett Ilijew, director and editor, grew up in East Berlin. She teaches film editing in Leipzig and Berlin.

We are very much looking forward to spending the evening with you!
